Story County Conservation Center Facility Master Plan

Ames, Iowa

Since its completion over 25 years ago, the Conservation Center has provided a home to the county’s wildlife education and preservation programs. It’s usage by area schools for outdoor educational programs has grown more popular over the years, creating a need for additional spaces. The center requested a feasibility study to address the site impact of adding a new multipurpose room, display gallery, exhibit rooms, offices and new site entrance. Building accessibility and security were also addressed. There was also a strong desire to establish a new geothermal heating system for the entire facility, to upgrade to current standards and to meet their own preservation standards.

In developing the initial concepts, particular care was taken to address sustainable materials and building processes, minimize site disruption and to have minimal effect on the daily routine programs scheduled throughout the year. The study was well received by the Board and is currently waiting for funding.
