Westown Apartments addresses the need for affordable senior housing in Marshalltown. A tax credit project funded through the Iowa Department of Economic Development, this project also had to comply with design requirements of the newly established Main Street Historical District. Extensive meetings between the owner, contractor and community representatives ensured the final design evolved into a building aesthetic that would be well received. Designed into the traditional storefront, two thousand square feet of retail/commercial space was provided on the street side of the building. Inside, the design focus created a secure independent living dwellings that gave residents autonomy and sense of community. The project incorporated 36 one and two bedroom apartments with semi-private and semi-public building amenities. Also included are community and fitness rooms, a library, computer services, a medical exam room and on-site parking. Open in 2004, this project filled immediately with residents and continues to have a long waiting list.
