Stern Residence

Ames, Iowa

This unique residence was inspired by the client's interest in architectural combinations of material, light and form. The client gave free reign to explore new design solutions and non-traditional application of materials. When approaching the home, interior volumes are expressed through the form of the building. Exterior cladding changes from stone to standing seam metal, which traditionally is used for roofing. This design feature creates a contrast in texture and blends natural with the man-made. A centralized living area with vaulted ceilings and south facing clerestory windows illuminate the interior with a volume of daylight. To maintain minimum obstruction of light, wire banisters were used around the grand piano. The bedrooms, on the other hand, are darker and more intimate spaces. A connection with the bedrooms and main living space is established with the use of sliding doors as separation. To finish off the unique interior environment, the dining room light fixture was hand crafted and custom designed.
